Example Data Table

Age Weight Sessions First Feed Session Minutes Pumping Supplement Estimated Daily Need
2 months 5.2 kg 8 06:00 AM 16 left + 14 right 2 x 15 min 120 ml 780 ml
5 months 6.8 kg 7 06:30 AM 14 left + 12 right 1 x 15 min 60 ml 1020 ml
8 months 8.0 kg 6 07:00 AM 12 left + 12 right 1 x 20 min 90 ml 960 ml

Formula Used

Estimated Daily Milk Need = baby weight in kilograms × age-based milk factor.

The age-based milk factor is 150 ml for 0 to 6 months. It is 120 ml for 7 to 12 months. It is 90 ml after 12 months for a simple planning estimate.

Estimated Direct Milk Per Session = (estimated daily milk need − supplement volume) ÷ planned sessions.

Direct Nursing Time Per Day = (left minutes + right minutes) × planned sessions.

Pumping Time Per Day = pumping sessions × pump minutes.

Total Care Time = (session minutes + settling buffer) × planned sessions + pumping time.

Average Interval = 24 ÷ planned sessions, unless you enter a custom interval.

These numbers are planning estimates only. Feeding transfer varies by baby, latch, age, sleep, and milk supply.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the baby age and weight first. Add your preferred number of sessions, or leave it at zero for an automatic estimate.

Choose the first feeding time. Enter the average minutes spent on each breast. Add buffer minutes for burping, settling, and diaper changes.

If you pump, enter the number of pumping sessions, minutes, and average output. Add any supplement volume you plan to give during the day.

Enter the wet diaper count and your target for night feeds. Then press the button to build the daily feeding plan.

The calculator shows summary values, a timed schedule, and planner notes. Use the export buttons to save the result as CSV or PDF.

Breastfeeding Session Planner Guide

Why a session planner helps

A breastfeeding session planner gives structure to busy days. It helps parents see feeding times, pumping blocks, and rest windows in one place. That clarity reduces guesswork. It can also support shared caregiving. A simple plan makes the day easier to follow.

What this calculator measures

This calculator estimates sessions per day, average interval, nursing time, pumping time, and daily care time. It also creates a practical schedule from the first feeding time. The planner alternates the starting breast. It adds pump reminders when pumping sessions are entered. It also compares wet diapers with a simple goal.

How parents can use the results

Use the results as a planning tool, not a diagnosis. Some babies feed quickly. Others need longer sessions. Some cluster feed in the evening. That can still be normal. The schedule helps you prepare for likely feeding windows, pumping tasks, and household routines. It can also help partners coordinate support.

Useful routine tips

Start with realistic session counts. Add a buffer for burping and settling. Keep night feeds visible, especially in the early months. Track wet diapers and general feeding comfort. If a plan feels too tight, widen the interval or reduce nonessential tasks. Flexible planning is usually more sustainable than a rigid schedule.

When to seek extra support

If weight gain is poor, wet diapers stay low, feeds are painful, or the baby seems unusually sleepy, speak with a pediatrician or lactation consultant. A planner is helpful, but hands-on assessment matters. Use this tool to organize the day, spot patterns, and prepare better questions for care professionals.

FAQs

1. Is this planner a medical tool?

No. It is a routine planning tool. It helps organize feeding sessions, pumping, and daily timing. It does not replace advice from a pediatrician or lactation consultant.

2. Why does the calculator use weight?

Weight helps create a simple estimate for daily milk needs. It makes the session plan more personalized. Actual intake can still vary from baby to baby.

3. What if my baby cluster feeds?

Cluster feeding can be normal, especially during growth spurts. You can raise the session count or shorten the interval. Use the planner as a flexible guide.

4. Should I leave target sessions at zero?

Yes, if you want an automatic age-based estimate. Enter your own value when you already follow a specific routine or a clinician has given a plan.

5. Why are wet diapers included?

Wet diapers are a simple daily checkpoint. They do not measure everything, but they can help parents notice patterns that may need more attention.

6. Can I use this for mixed feeding?

Yes. Add the supplement volume and any pumping sessions. The planner will adjust direct feeding estimates and show the overall daily structure.

7. Does the pump output equal baby intake?

No. Pump output and direct milk transfer are not the same. The planner uses pump numbers for routine tracking only. It is not a perfect intake measure.

8. When should I ask for help?

Ask for help if feeds are painful, wet diapers stay low, weight gain is poor, or the baby seems hard to wake. Professional support matters.
